Clary Sage Essential Oil Uses, Benefits and Cautions

Salvia Sclarea is the given Latin name for clary sage… an amazingly powerful herb in the salvia or sage family that affords users all sorts of holistic benefits. This plant is native to Italy and Syria but is now grown all over the world. This essential oil made by distilling the buds of the clary sage plant.

Sage is known as the “giver of life,” and it is the milder version of common sage which can be associated with toxicity issues. Here are some of its wonderful benefits:

Powerfully antiseptic, clary sage is said to have been historically used to prevent tetanus in open wounds, as well as in the prevention of sepsis which is a contamination of the blood.

Loss of libido in both males and females, impotence, and irregular menstrual cycles are all said to be treatable with clary sage which is a known aphrodisiac and hormone regulator. Possibly related to hormone function is this herb’s ability to reduce the amount of sebum secreted when used in skin care applications.

Clary Sage Anti-Aging Cream Recipe

This essential oil is marvelous for mature skin and has a soothing influence on delicate skin. When combined with sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter, your skin is softened and nourished. Here are the ingredients:

6 drops clary sage essential oil*
1 TBSP sweet almond oil
2 TBSP coconut oil
1 TBSP cocoa butter
1 Vitamin E Capsule

Put the oils and cocoa butter into a small pan and heat gently over a low temperature. Stir this mixture often until combined and melted. Take off the heat and stir in the contents of a vitamin E capsule and the clary sage oil. Pour this mixture into a small tin with a lid. Cool this for several hours or leave overnight. Take a small amount and massage over your face, neck and under your eyes at night after cleansing the skin.

*Do not use the clary sage essential oil if pregnant or nursing. Replace it with lavender, chamomile, lemon, peppermint or sweet orange essential oils instead.

In addition to the numerous benefits listed above, this essential oil is claimed to alleviate chronic fatigue and reduce inflammation. It can be made into an anti-fungal skin treatment for conditions such as ringworm and Athlete’s Foot, by combining a few drops with a base of coconut oil and applying directly to the affected area.

 

Clary Sage Cautions and Concerns:

This essential oil affects both testosterone and estrogen production. If you are undergoing hormone therapy or are pregnant, you should consult with your physician prior to using.

Clary sage affects different people in different ways. It causes excitability in some sensitive individuals, and drowsiness and headache in others. You might try a skin patch test with a 24-hour wait time if you are prone to sensitivities.

Do not use this oil on infants or toddlers.
